I have always heard a lot of hype about these guys but have actually only ever heard the ‘Spiritchaser’ album in its entirety, which actually didn’t sound much like I expected…
Any recommendations as to their best material? Any albums with a somewhat ‘darker’ atmosphere perhaps?? Thanks in advance.

(Apologies if this isn’t the most fitting sub-forum for these guys)

Hi

Dead Can Dance have been a huge source of wonder, inspiration and enjoyment over the years and it's sad that they are no longer together.

Spiritchaser was their last release and was more ethno-ambient in sound. I think it's a great album but certainly not the best. My money is on 'Within the Realm of a Dying Sun'. This is just one sublime album that I reach for again and again and again. The vocal talents of Lisa Gerrad and Brendan Perry are perfectly balanced and the music is bordering on the classical, albeit the darker, more minimal side. 'Cantara' and 'Anywhere out of the World' are perhaps the two stand out tracks, here. This album is a must.

All their albums have something unique to offer so it might be worth looking out for ' A Passage in Time' which is a compilation of tracks drawn from their pre-Spiritchaser albums. You should be able to find this no problem on ebay/amazon or a plethora of other sites.

Hope this helps
Adam

Don't worry, this is the correct sub-forum Wink

Dead Can Dance is one of those bands for me that can be played over and over and you'll discover something new in the music over and over again. I even hooked my dad on DCD. Though, I sadly have only two albums. Spiritchaser and Into The Labyrinth. The first one being my favorite of the two.

You might want to try your luck on the discogs marketplace.

You definitely need to dig further into the past. Spiritchaser barely hints at the majesty of their previous works.

"Persephone (The Gathering of Flowers" off Within the Realm of a Dying Sun remains one of the most moving songs I've ever heard. Dark, majestic, beautiful. The Serpent's Egg is of similar caliber. With Aeon they moved from brooding orchestrals to a more baroque, Renaissance influence... and then you have Into the Labyrinth which is their most diverse & "song-friendly" mixture of styles. Great album but doesn't rapture my soul like Dying Sun.

Backtracking to the early 80's, you skip over their self-titled debut, rather 80's goth-rock, definitely one to save for the completists. The following Spleen & Ideal sees them shedding the goth-rock skin with some very brooding neoclassical pieces ("Circumradiant Dawn"). And, full circle, back to their 3rd album Within the Realm of a Dying Sun (a MUST OWN).

If you listen to artists like Elend or Arcana, you definitely need to acquaint yourself with DCD to hear where their influence came from.

I'd have to agree with the persons posting before me.

"Within the Realm of A Dying Sun" and "Spleen and Ideal" has to be two of the best releases ever in this cathegory of music.

I like the first album too, but if you are into the darker, brooding sides of DCD then you can't go wrong with the second and third.

"Serpent's Egg" has some very strong moments like "Host of the Seraphim", as do "Aion" with "Black Sun" and "As The Bell Rings The Maypole Spins" but they are very different. The more recent material is also very good, but in a separate sort of way.

If you can get your hands on a recording from anywhere on their recent farewell tour then by all means do! It's a very rewarding listen Smile

DCD have a song called " In The Kingdom Of The Blind, The One Eyed Man Is King" that song blew my mind when I was younger and more impressionable!

'Serpent's egg' (1988) album's damn good, & 'Aion' sounds completely medieval.

Two of my favorite songs have to be "Xavier" off Within the Realm of the Dying Sun and "Black Sun" off of Aion.
Both songs are immensely melancholic, foreboding, and surreal.

Every album is worth owning, although, as some have said, the first album is much more in the post-punk/goth rock vein, so I wouldn't recommend it if you dislike that style. Spiritchaser, in my opinion, is the most lighthearted and slightly more commercial album of the bunch. The Serpents Egg contains some great moments, but in my opinion, ends far too soon(slightly over 30 minutes long).

'Anywhere out of the World' theme is other-worldly.....so deep.
