Great Annihilator |

Can't believe I'd forgotten how good Great Annihilator was... must check out their back catalogue...
I also recall some very disturbing gossip about Giras earliest sexual experiences which he claimed had coloured his views ever since... but I'm remembering a story told to me 15 years ago so I may be totally wrong about this...

Well if it isn't true then I'd be starting an unpleasant rumour as the story related to an illegal act. It's not a funny story... sadly.

Agreed that Children of God is my favorite as well. Perhaps its because its what I cut my Swans teeth on, but to this day, I can pull it out and enjoy it at any time.

did he rape a clown or something?
I know he went whoring around Europe for years when he was young, so there's probably quite a few "interesting" stories he could tell you.

SWANS are one of my fav bands.
Nothing like it out there.
I glad SWANS are one of few bands who has not been raped by the mainstream.
I hope it will stay this way still...

I was lucky enough to see them at the Astoria, London, when they played their Farewell tour....I think in '96 ....and had the pleasure of shaking Michael Giras as he wandered about backstage during the support act which, interestingly (or not) was provided by Panasonic. I felt at the time Swans ceased to be that music was losing one of its true jewels but that few people would realise how precious until long after the event ! I'm hoping for some sort of revival..... |
I was at that gig too, incredible. I find that every period of Swans suits a mood of mine, I can't really pick favourites, although I always seem to come back to Holy Money/Greed, Children of God and White Light from the Mouth of Infinity. I'm a big fan of the first two Skin albums, as well. Some old colleagues of mine actually did sound for Swans, one for The Burning World Tour and Andy Ray's work on the second disc of Swans are Dead. They both said that Gira was hard to cope with, but that it was worth it.

aw, swans are brilliant. i discovered them just as they split up, in one of those annoying coincidences that always seems to happen to me.
and i must admit that i'm often guilty of the "i like their older stuff better" thing... although it's not a dogmatic point for me; i always hope that bands will surpass themselves with every new release but it seldom happens. and for me it's not always the first record… i think i have favourite bits and pieces from all points of swans' career, though. the first album i got was "the great annihilator", which is probably still my favourite, but "greed/holy money/cop/young god" and "white light…" are both up there too… in fact there are too many good records to pick from! (just not "the burning world" so much)
i never really got into angels of light, but then i haven't heard too much of their stuff. what's a good starting point?

I would recommend "Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home", it was released by Young God Records 2oo3. Especially the second track on that album called "All souls rising" is worth of trying. A bit more on the energetic side of The Angels Of Light. Yummy & Groovy.

A great band, no doubt about it, but I kind of overdosed on the Swans during the '90s. I haven't really sat down and soaked in a Swans album for many years now. I guess that I have to be in the right mood to fully appreciate Gira's monotone vocals coupled with his nihilistic lyrics. There are times when I'd put on a Swans record and I ended up feeling even more depressed than I was before I started listening to it. When I'm looking for music to uplift my spirit, I go elsewhere, but if I'm looking for a 'good time' in the gray zone of ambiguity I guess that the Swans are a good enough choice.
I actually enjoyed The World of Skin's adventurous '10 Songs For Another World' LP and Gira's 'Drainland' LP a little bit more than any of the Swans albums.

maybe, but actually, i was never a fan of what she did in Swans. Though her solo stuff is soooo amazing. She planned to come here for a live show (with weird metallists Nachtmystium), but guy from Nachtmystium broke his leg and event was cancelled... Small tragedy it was.
