I love Burzum's Dauši Baldrs. It is a brilliant CD. I tried making some music like it but can't seem to get it sounding right. Is there anything eles around that sounds similer?

Personally I think, that this is one of the worst records of all times. One "nice" song, but the rest pretty much sucks. There is nothing "classical" in this "two-finger-searching-the-keys" sound.

I haven't heard Dauši Baldrs (yet) but The Soil Bleeds Black sounds like Temnojar, so you might want to check them out. They're not really classical though...

I used to have the same opinion as Kruzifixxion, and what pissed me off the most were the legions of ass-kissing anus.com Burzum fanatics who would praise absolutely anything Varg did as "artistic genius", be it music, or shit on a cracker.
From them, I thought I was destined to hate this record forever.
However now, having some distance from the metall scene, and listening to a great many cheesy John Carpenter synth recordings(and loving them!), I've found this record to have a certain charm.
Varg's synth recordings have this certain "Jiri Barta short film soundtrack" quality to them that makes their primitive childlike quality a thing of beauty.

Two seconds or so was all I needed to know this album is terrible. I love Burzum's black metal albums with all my heart but everything after "Filosofem" makes me think that that Varg has been sitting in Norwegian prison a little two long.

Exactly. I always thought Daudi Baldrs was a shining example of how easily impressed the metal crowd is. As a general rule of thumb if a "classical" or "ambient" band is a side project of a metal artists it's a pretty safe bet it's going to be shit.

Yeah this is usually true. And then you get those metal bands who try to make keyboard-driven "ambient" intros that end up being just terrible!

Here's how I see it. The underground black metal scene has always shunned ingenuity, proficiency, growth, experimentation, good production.... the basics that most other styles strive to achieve. When a black metal musician does a side project they usually attempt to apply the same principles to it that they would to a "kvlt" black metal band. Unfortunately the whole primitive approach usually fails to impress anyone outside of the black metal community.
