Best albums of 2010?

Some of our most prominent artists released new material this year - from DIJ and C93 to Rome and Spiritual Front. Any thoughts? Here are mine...

Blood Axis - Born Again
This is the album coming out the neofolk scene this year I liked the most. I love the psych folk touch (at times even rock) and the traditional sounding folk songs - rough but well-crafted, make me think of some pub deep in the countryside of Northern Europe.

Rome - Nos Chants Perdus
I expected to be totally disappointed by this album but it turned out to be quite good. Nothing ground-breaking though.

Derniere Volonte - Immortel
Just to opposite to Rome - I couldn't wait for this album to come but after all I wasn't that much impressed. It's not bad but lacks something, something that made DV songs so catchy and memorable. I prefer both old DV and Position Patalle.

Spiritual Front - Rotten Roma Casino
Nothing wrong with pop but they put too much salt in the meal this time. I'm not one those old fans who are so shocked but not enjoying it as much as I wished either.

Current 93 - Baalstorm Sing Omega
Has its strong moments but Aleph was better.

Death in June - Peaceful Snow
Already discussed.

As a whole nothing really impressed me, nothing that I'll play after 5 years... maybe I missed to hear something or didn't pay attention to some promising newcomers?

Pretty good albums outside the neofolk sceno although I doubt I'll like them so much after a while too.
My personal discovery was the Wierd Records label and most of its artists - some of them made their debuts this years, some an year ot two ago but I love them all.

Not much neo-folk to consider this year but theres some interesting appearings:

All the releases from Art Abscons issued this year are fabulous: Der Verborgene Gott, Am himmel mit feuer and the split with Gabe Unruh.

I agree with the Blood axis-Born again... Although im not totally convinced

Vilkduja-Nežinau from Lithuania, good set of neofolkers, combining a portion of cabaret music and psychedelics.

Von thronstahl-Conscriptum (just the remake from "saints are coming" is worth the album) But -The thronstahls- are more and more a living joke for me.

On a "poppier" scale perhaps theres more stuff to consider:

Swans-My father will guide me up a rope to the sky (Less potent but still interesting)

Killing joke-Absolute dissent (the ultimate un-pop album of the year)

Snog-The dissolving satellite of egoism overturned (unplugged Snog, never cease to be cynic and utterly melancholic a must for a dry martini)

Black lung-The soul consumer ( fucking outstanding album, one of the best ive heard from Thrussel in a long time)

Silver lady-Inclus Concentré De Génie Avec Morceaux Dedans (Gae bolg going crazier and crazier)

The reissue from Deutsch nepal-The silent container

Hmmm don't know about neofolk, but over in the land of dark ambient Phelios, Svart Greiner, K11, Phaenon and Nautica put out good albums. The rest of them I addressed here:

Crystal Castles II is maybe the album of the year for me too Smile Never expected someone here to like this.

Some non neofolk 2010 stuff I liked:

O. Children - O. Children
Amazing debut, post-punk/darkwave revival sound similar to Interpol and White Lies but heavier. They still remain almost underground which I find strange and unfair - they deserve to be huge.

Nitzer Ebb - Industrial Complex
Good mixture of electronic pop and EBM.

Brendan Perry - Ark
I love his voice and earlier DCD stuff with his vocals, some of the songs here are exactly what I want to hear from him.
